However, we got a parking fine in Thessaloniki the first day of the trip because we parked on a blue parking slot on a sunday. Everyone in Greece knows that blue parking slots are for residents, and that parking is free on sundays yet policemen are still on duty, but unfortunately as foreigners we didn't.
We were told by the clerk at the hotel that we could pay the fine (40€) at the post office, but it was closed on Sundays.
We moved on and the next day we went to a post office in another city. The clerk told us that parking fines were the only fines we could not pay in his post office. We would have to go back to Thessaloniki, which was not possible at all for us. We called the Rental Company and after a while we were told that instead of looking for post offices, we should pay the fine directly at the end of the trip, when we would give the car back.
The next Saturday, we gave back the car and we asked how to pay the fine. The clerk told us that the amount to pay was 95€. Astonished, we were explained that policemen have the power to remove the identification plate of a car if the car is parked at a wrong parking slot. However, because this rule would be very prejudiciable to rental companys, the policemen cannot remove the plate on rental cars. As a compensation, they just double the parking fine.
So here is the end of the story: we paid 80€ for the double fine plus 15€ for the rental company as a service fee, meaning that the rental costs jumped from 65€ a week to 160€. Nothing was mentioned in the rental contract, and I couldn't find anything about this on the internet.
This turned a very good experience with the car into a much bitter experience.
