★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ο ναός του Αγίου Ονουφρίου βρίσκεται στην κεντρική αγορά του Ηρακλείου και είναι εντελώς άγνωστος στους περισσότερους, καθώς είναι εγκλωβισμένος από διάφορα καταστήματα των οδών 1866, Τσικριτζή και Έβανς. Σήμερα μπορεί να δει κάποιος τον τρούλο του μέσα από την αγορά της οδού 1866 ή τις ταράτσες των παρακείμενων πολυκατοικιών, ενώ πρόσβαση στο εσωτερικό του ναού υπάρχει μέσα από το αρτοποιείο Τούλη.
Σήμερα ο ναός ανήκει σε ιδιώτη. Σε σχέση με τους περισσότερους ξεχασμένους ναούς του Χάνδακα, ο ναός του Αγίου Ονουφρίου βρίσκεται σε σχετικά καλή κατάσταση αν και ο τρούλος έχει υποστεί έντονες ρηγματώσεις. Επίσης, εσωτερικά έχει χωριστεί σε δύο τμήματα, κάθετα και οριζόντια, με την προσθήκη μεσοπατώματος από μπετόν και κάθετου τοίχου με δοκάρια επίσης από μπετόν, που οριοθετεί τις ιδιοκτησίες. Παρόλα αυτά με τις κατάλληλες παρεμβάσεις θα μπορούσε να καταστεί λειτουργικός, αφού αγοραστεί από το δημόσιο.
Ο ναός αναφέρεται για πρώτη φορά σε έγγραφο του 1583 και είναι μονόκλιτη βασιλική με τρούλο. Κατά τη διάρκεια της Οθωμανικής κατοχής του νησιού πιθανώς λειτούργησε ως χαμάμ. Μετά την αποχώρηση των Οθωμανών μεταβιβάστηκε σε ιδιώτη και λειτουργούσε ως λαδάδικο.
Στο Ιστορικό Μουσείο Κρήτης φυλάσσεται πώρινο αγαλματίδιο του Αγίου Ονουφρίου (16ος αιώνας) με ελληνική επιγραφή που αναγράφει «Στέκομαι γυμνός μπροστά στο δημιουργό μου γιατί εκείνος πήρε από πάνω μου τη ντροπή της αμαρτίας», το οποίο ίσως ανήκε στο ναό.
The church of Agios Onoufrios is located in the central market of Heraklion and is completely unknown to most, as it is trapped by various shops on 1866, Tsikritzi and Evans streets. Today one can see its dome through the Market Street 1866 or the rooftops of the adjacent apartment buildings, while access to the interior of the church is through the Toulis bakery.
Today the church is owned by a private individual. Compared to most of the forgotten temples of Chandakas, the church of Agios Onoufrios is in relatively good condition although the dome has been severely cracked. It has also been internally divided into two sections, vertical and horizontal, with the addition of a concrete floor and a vertical wall with concrete beams, which defines the properties. However with appropriate interventions it could become operational after being purchased by the public.
The church is first mentioned in a 1583 document and is a single-aisled basilica with a dome. During the Ottoman occupation of the island it probably functioned as a steam bath. After leaving the Ottomans, he was transferred to a private company and served as an oilman.
In the Museum of Crete there is a fountain statue of Saint Onoufrios (16th century) with a Greek inscription that reads "I stand naked in front of my creator because he took over me the shame of sin", which may have belonged to the temple.
