★ ★ ★ ★ ★ When visiting the village of Vlahata in Kefalonia make sure that you incorporate a site visit to this little church which has only recently been restored.
This 12th century church has been magnificently restored and welcomes people from all over the world especially on the name day of her patron saint on 23 July.
On this day people from all over the island and other visitors join the locals and what is traditionally known as a panigiri which is hosted by local dancing and a local band and serving traditional local Kefalonian food
The iconography on the walls of the church are glorious and some portions have been maintained and preserved in exceptional quality. Services are conducted here every Sunday but the special service is on 23 July every year.
TUcked neatly into the mountainside this little church can be found at the end of a winding part dirt part asphalt Road but is well worth a visit both for the views that you will see and for the glorious church and architectural structure that this place represents.
I have been to Kefalonia many many many times however this was the first time I was there during The traditional festive season and I can assure you it is well worth the visit. Many people choose to walk there from the village of Vlahata though it is on an incline so wear comfy shoes and enjoy the afternoon sunset during your casual stroll whilst others prefer to drive and whilst there is parking available it is in one of the local fields which could prove a tad tricky to get out of sometimes
All photos are from my recent trip
