Είναι λίγο περίεργο ότι στα δύο μεγάλα αυτά νησιά βυζαντινό μουσείο υπάρχει μόνο στο ταπεινό χωριό της Μάρπησσας. Ωστόσο, στο μικρό χωριό αυτό υπάρχουν δεκαεννιά εκκλησίες μόνο μέσα στον οικισμό και πολλά ακόμα εξωκλήσια.
