Αν αναλογιστούμε οτι κατασκευάστηκε, όταν ακόμη η πόλη λεγόταν Δεδέαγατς και ήταν υπό Οθωμανική κυριαρχία, σε πιάνει δέος, Ωστόσο ο προαύλιος χώρος εδώ και πολλά΄ χρόνια είναι παρατημένος, με σπασμένες πλάκες, μπαλώματα με τσιμέντο και μια εικόνα που δεν ταιριάζει για μητρόπολη. (αν δεν κάνω λάθος όλος αυτός ο χώρος διαμορφώθηκε την δεκαετία του 70 και από τότε έμεινε ο ίδιος) One of the most beautiful metropolitan churches in Greece. Στα 1890 ο επιχώριος Μητροπολίτης Αίνου μετέφερε την έδρα του από την Αίνο (σημ. Τουρκία) στο Δεδέ-αγάτς (σημ. Αλεξανδρούπολη), δίνοντας έτσι μεγαλύτερη βαρύτητα στην περιοχή. Ο νέος μεγαλοπρεπής Μητροπολιτικός Ναός θεμελιώθηκε το 1892 και εγκαινιάστηκε το 1901 από τον τότε Μητροπολίτη Αίνου, Γερμανό Θεοτοκά. Πρόκειται για πετρόκτιστη βασιλική με τρούλο και δύο κωδωνοστάσια που ανυψώθηκαν το 1908. Εορτάζει στις 6 Δεκεμβρίου ημέρα μνήμης του Αγίου Νικολάου. Agios Nikolaos was born in the 3rd century AD. in Patara of Lycia, and acted during the reign of the emperors Diocletian (284 - 304 AD), Maximian (286 - 305 AD) and Constantine the Great. In fact, he took part in the First Ecumenical Council as Bishop of Myra in Lycia. The church was first built around 1860 as a small wooden church. In 1890 the local Metropolitan of Ainos moved his seat from Ainos (Turkey) to Dede-agats (Alexandroupolis), thus giving more weight to the region.
