Originally erected either during the 7th or the 11th century AD on the ruins of the Ancient Theater of Tegea, it served as the base of the Archibishop of Tegea during medieval times. It was abandoned during the 19th century, but the Tegea Association bought the area and completely rennovated the church by 1889. The famous German architect Ernest Ziller was responsible for the work. The church serves as the religious center of the Tegea area up till this day.
