τα Δημήτρια είναι πολιτιστικός θεσμός της Θεσσαλονίκης, προερχόμενος από την αρχαιότατη εμποροπανήγυρη με το ίδιο όνομα. Οι εκδηλώσεις πραγματοποιούνται κατά τους μήνες Σεπτέμβριο και Οκτώβριο. Φιλοξενούνται σε διάφορους χώρους πολιτισμού, κυρίως σε αυτούς που διαχειρίζεται ο Δήμος Θεσσαλονίκης, όπως το Δημαρχιακό Μέγαρο, το Δημοτικό Θέατρο Άνετον, o πολυχώρος LABattoir (Παλαιά Δημοτικά Σφαγεία) και το Maison Crystal, αλλά και σε πολλά Μουσεία, γκαλερί και εξωτερικούς χώρους της πόλης.[1] Προέλευση Προς τιμήν του αγίου Δημητρίου ξεκίνησε η γιορτή των "Δημητρίων" επί Βυζαντίου (ψηφιδωτό του αγίου Δημητρίου στον ομώμυμο ναό της Θεσσαλονίκης). Ο θεσμός έχει την προέλευσή του στην παράδοση να ανταλλάσσονται τα προϊόντα της ενδοχώρας με τα θαλασσινά προϊόντα, κατά την εποχή του Βυζαντίου και συγκεκριμένα από τον 10ο αιώνα μ.Χ. Ονομάζονταν «Δημήτρια» διότι πραγματοποιούνταν κατά τις ημέρες εορτασμού της μνήμης του πολιούχου της Θεσσαλονίκης Αγίου Δημητρίου.[2] Η πανήγυρη με την ονομασία αυτή άκμασε τον 14ο αιώνα, τον επονομαζόμενο και "χρυσό αιώνα" της Θεσσαλονίκης. Αρχικά η γιορτή αυτή είχε κυρίως θρησκευτικό και εμπορικό χαρακτήρα. Παράλληλα όμως ο λαός της πόλης κατά τα «Δημήτρια» έβρισκε πολλές διασκεδάσεις και ευκαιρίες ψυχαγωγίας με σχοινοβάτες, γελωτοποιούς, μίμους και θεατρίνους οι οποίοι γύριζαν τις αγορές και τις γειτονιές. Επίσης κατά τη γιορτή, σύμφωνα με τις πηγές, παρουσιάζονταν θεατρικά έργα του αρχαιοελληνικού δραματολογίου καθώς και διαλέξεις φιλοσόφων και λογίων.[2] Η ακμή αυτή επιβραδύνθηκε ιδιαίτερα από την πολιορκία των Οθωμανών, από το 1422 έως και το 1430, χρονιά άλωσης της πόλης.
