Σύμφωνα με την Καινή Διαθήκη, ήταν ο πρώτος που κλήθηκε από τον Χριστό να γίνει Απόστολος, γι'αυτό και στην ορθόδοξη παράδοση συχνά αποκαλείται «Πρωτόκλητος». Η Καινή Διαθήκη δεν δίνει πολλές πληροφορίες για το πρόσωπό του, ενώ οι σχετικές παραδόσεις και θρύλοι πολλαπλασιάζονται από τον 3ο αιώνα και ιδιαίτερα κατά τον 8ο και 9ο αιώνα. Κατά την ορθόδοξη παράδοση, θεωρείται ιδρυτής της Εκκλησίας του Βυζαντίου (μετέπειτα Κωνσταντινούπολης) και οι Πατριάρχες Κωνσταντινουπόλεως διάδοχοί του.
