Ο ναός Παναγίας Δέσποινας,εορτάζει ανήμερα των Αγ. Πέτρου και Παύλου επειδή το 1690 τότε που η Λαμία ονομάζονταν Ζη(ι)τούνι ( απ' το τούρκικο ή αραβικό Zeitun που πάει να πει ελιά ή απ' τη σλαβική λέξη σιτόνιον, που σημαίνει Η σιτοβόλος περιοχή ή "πέραν του ποταμού κειμένη χώρα"),
ο ναός ήταν αφιερωμένος στους πρωτοκορυφαίους αποστόλους Πέτρο και Παύλο.
Στα πλαίσια του αγώνα της επανάστασης απο τον τουρκικο ζυγό, η εκκλησία γκρεμίστηκε από τους Τούρκους,απαγορεύτηκε ο εκκλησιασμός για 40 ολόκληρα χρόνια και οι Λαμιώτες χριστιανοί εκκλησιάζονταν στα σπίτια τους.
Οταν δόθηκε η άδεια να κτιστεί ο ναός ξανά,με τον νέο ααρχιεπίσκοπο Άνθιμο, που ήρθε από την Κων/πολη,τότε ο λαός της πόλης του έδωσε το όνομα της Παναγίας Δέσποινας.
Αφού όμως ο ναός ήταν καθαγιασμένος/εγκαινιασμένος ως Πέτρου κ Παύλου,εορτάζει και στις 29-6 προς τιμήν των δύο αποστόλων.

It is the most ancient parish of the city of Lamia.
The church of Panagia Despina, celebrates on the day of Ag. Peter and Paul because in 1690, when Lamia was called Zhi (tuna) (from the Turkish or Arabic Zeitun that says the olive tree or from the Slavic word "sion", meaning the wheat region or "beyond the river" ),
the temple was dedicated to the primordial apostles Peter and Paul.
In the context of the struggle for the revolution of the Turkish yoke, the church was demolished by the Turks, the church was forbidden for 40 whole years and the Lamioth Christians were ecclesiastical in their homes.
When permission was given to build the temple again, with the new Archbishop Anthimos, who came from Constantinople, the people of the city gave him the name of Virgin Mary Despina.
However, after the temple was sanctified as Peter and Paul, he celebrates on 29-6 in honor of the two apostles.
