During the past decades there has been a remarkable or rather dramatic development of the care of patients with urolithiasis. In view of the considerable need of surgical intervention as well as treatment aiming at prevention of recurrences, this scientific and clinical field is important not only for urologists and surgeons, but also for everyone who in one way or another is professionally involved in the treatment of patients with urinary tract stones. Because stone disease is a considerable worldwide medical problem, it stands to reason that modern and efficient methods for the care for this large number of patients is of fundamental importance. Accordingly, it is highly desirable to rapidly disseminate new achievements and new knowledge. One way to reach such a goal was the establishment of ESD (Experts in Stone Disease). This group of world-leading experts representeing various parts of the urolithological field was started with the aim of spreading to colleagues all over the world, new and important up-to-date research results of stone removal, hands-on training as well as medical treatment of stone patients. Not only was it necessary to teach how modern techniques of stone removal best should be handled, but also to increase understanding of the underlying pathology of stone formation and risk of recurrences. Such steps are important to decrease personal suffering, to save renal function and in a long-term perspective to improve health economics. The goals outlined above were possible to reach by the large number of ESD conferences organized in different parts of the world under the leadership of Dr Noor Buchholz. Importantly, it had not been possible to do this without the outstanding, unique, and generous support from INSESSION EVENTS. It also should be stated that management of patients with urolithiasis certainly had been much different from what it is today without the ESD coferences.
