Just outside Kalamata, in Exo Mani, at the roots of Taygetos, is the old cobbled path "Biliovo", one of the most well-preserved paths in the Peloponnese, unique in its kind, which is in fact characterized as a monument of folk architecture. It was created by local craftsmen in the early 20th century in an effort that lasted 25 years and was a lever for the development of the local society and economy as it connected the highest with the lowest villages of western Mani.

This is the third time I went but this time I went all the way and went to the village of Altomira. It is a wonderful and fantastic place with a very nice view. Just someone in charge has to deal with it because in some places it has been destroyed. Worth to go. And

Incredible view, steep climb but very difficult, about 500m altitude difference, in some places has fallen but you pass, get water even though there is plenty in Altomira

The walk and view is incredible. However, wouldn't it be Greece and holidays this would be the occasion to drop an angry review. If you wish to avoid searching for one hour the right entry point for the route or how to reach such place by car please use the following coordinates: 36.965406,22.199567 Please do not be irritated by several closed gates but know that your drive ends there. The path actually starts at the last closed gate into a passage with some would usually identify as a belt of green separating different land plots. Once you have walked the first meters through the bushes the path will reveal and is easy to follow until the top (recommend to take a wood stick - for the first 10 min and at the village you might meet some guarding dogs, we had no unpleasend encounters though). The hike is brilliant and rewarding. It is true that maintenance seems not a top priority, however, the parts which suffered in the past are easy to pass and are not a threat. The old village at the top is not particularly rewarding but could be described as a "must see". At the entrance to the village you will find a water well, which provides cold - assume - drinking water. If you push forward into the village you will be greated by goats, sheeps, henns and for a big part ruins. We called the village the "sheep village" as sheep live in several house ruins and "check out" it's streets as its citizens. Recommendations!!!

The Biliovos kalderimi is one of the finest stone paths in the Mani, climbing some 500m from the village of Sotirianika to Altomira. Its construction is amazing, particularly when you consider that it was built by hand and moved by mules. The views change at each bend in the path, and in spring the path and its immediate surroundings are full of wild flowers and attractive insects. There isn't much beyond the views when you get to Altomira so don't rely on there being any water, but there are signs that the village is being redeveloped.

It is an incredible hike up a stone path build before 1900 to transfer animals. It is a short hike of 2,5km but with an ascent of 500 meters. Mostly stairs. Something needs to be done in order to be preserved. I do the hike almost every year and unfortunately every time I see parts of the path destroyed.
