Der Name des Brunnens ist "Βρύση το ψευτης", was so viel wie „Brunnen“ oder „Quelle des Lügners" bedeutet. Man sagt, dass das Wasser aus dem gegenüber der Bucht von Messenien liegenden Taygetosgebirge kommt und unter der Bucht "durchgedrückt" wird. Das Wasser der Quelle hat Trinkwasserqualität und einen guten, milden Geschmack. Deshalb trifft man hier auch immer wieder Einheimische, die sich ihre Trinkwasservorräte hier holen. Der Sage nach heiraten Männer die aus der Quelle trinken, eine Frau aus Petalidi. Im Winter steht die Quelle des öfteren wegen des höheren Meeresspiegels unter Wasser und man kann kein Trinkwasser entnehmen.
