Nikolaos, I feel compelled to provide some feedback on the treatment my sister received for Febrile Neutropenia during our stay in Skiathos at the beginning of August 2017. Prior to my visit I sought assurances from you on 3 issues, which you gave by SMS: 1.Open 24/7 [you said Yes] 2.Facilities for intravenous treatment [Yes] 3.English speak [Yes, all of your staff spoke good English] My sister’s fever began on the 2nd Aug. In the afternoon we sought a consultation. We were told (by your assistant) to return in the evening when you would be there, because he basically he: a) didn’t speak English; and b) didn’t know what he was doing. So, we returned at 1930 in the evening. Following our (satisfactory) consultation with yourself on the 2nd, my sister’s fever worsened. I called you at around 3:30am on 3rd August. You initially tried to convince us wait until 9am, demonstrating a failure to understand the severity of the circumstances. After speaking with two leading specialists in the UK, I called back and insisted that we would need to bring my sister in, which you agreed to. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we discovered that you left us in the hands of the very same junior assistant from the day prior. Again, his English was poor (contrary to your assurances), but more worryingly, his medical competence was even poorer. My sister is a seasoned nurse and she could have self-administered her treatment a lot more competently. He did not seem to know what he was doing at all: •My sister had to show him where the correct medication was, because he couldn’t find it (you would expect he would know his way around better than her). •He didn’t understand how to prepare the medications – as I’m sure you know because he had to keep calling you. My sister had to help explain that also. •He was unable to use the port my sister had already installed. He used a butterfly needle instead of a cannula. And he did so clumsily and bruised my sister badly in the process (which we have pictures of). •He did not flush before administering paracetamol and did not dilute the solution with water, causing great pain. My sister had to tell him to stop. She didn’t get the paracetamol. •All the while, he was panicked and obviously out of his depth. You must have known this would be a challenge for him, but still you left us in his hands. Whilst things worked out ok in the end and we are very grateful to have received the antibiotics, which bought us some time to get to Vollos, the whole process was much more stressful than it should have been. In principle, it should not have been necessary to go to Vollos, since you claimed to have the necessary facilities, but we had no choice given our lack of confidence in the consistency and quality of care at your place. This made it difficult for my family to visit. My hope is that you will reflect on this letter and try to make better choices in the future. I do however, feel compelled to share my experience with other prospective Skiathos visitors, so that they don’t take false comfort from information you provide.
