Η νησίδα διαδραμάτισε σημαντικό ρόλο στην πολιορκία του Μεσολογγίου το 1826. Ήταν οχυρωμένη και αποτελούσε τμήμα της άμυνας του Μεσολογγίου. Στις 28 Φεβρουαρίου 1826 πάνω στον Τολμά έγινε μάχη μεταξύ Ελλήνων και Οθωμανών. Ανάμεσα στους νεκρούς ήταν και ο οπλαρχηγός Γρηγόρης Λιακατάς. Ο Λιακατάς είχε οχυρωθεί στην νησίδα με 300 άντρες από το Αιτωλικό και 18 κανόνια προσπαθώντας να ανακόψει τον Οθωμανικό στρατό του Χουσεΐν και να εμποδίσει την πολιορκία του Αιτωλικού και του Μεσολογγίου
 Historical monument
The islet played an important role in the siege of Messolonghi in 1826. It was fortified and was part of the defense of Messolonghi. On February 28, 1826, a battle took place between the Greeks and the Ottomans on Tolmas. Among the dead was the chief Grigoris Liakatas. Liakatas was fortified on the islet with 300 men from Aetoliko and 18 cannons trying to stop Hussein's Ottoman army and prevent the siege of Aetoliko and Mesolonghi
