Στην περιοχή έγιναν ανασκαφές από τον Wilhelm Dörpfeld το 1905 και σύμφωνα με τα ευρήματα του ο ναός είναι χτισμένος στο δάπεδο αρχαίου δωρικού ναού, του 5ου ή 6ου αιώνα πΧ, αγνώστου γυναικείας θεότητας, ο οποίος ήταν μεγαλύτερος από το ναό του Ηφαίστου στην Αρχαία Αγορά της Αθήνας αλλά και του Ποσειδώνα στο Σούνιο και λειτουργούσε μέχρι και τους ρωμαϊκούς χρόνους. Εικάζεται ότι πρόκειται για την θεά Δήμητρα. Η παράδοση αναφέρει ότι όποιο άτεκνο ζευγάρι κατά τη διάρκεια της λειτουργίας προσπαθήσει να “κολλήσει” ένα μικρό κέρμα στην εικόνα του αγίου, και τα καταφέρει, σύντομα θα αποκτήσει παιδί και μάλιστα αγόρι. Γι΄ αυτό και η τοπική λαϊκή παράδοση δίνει στον άγιο στο Ροδάκι το όνομα “Σερνικάρης”. Η εκκλησία είναι χτισμένη από πολλά κομμάτια του αρχαίου ναού. Η Αγία Τράπεζα είναι τοποθετημένη πάνω σε κιονόκρανο του αρχαίου ναού (του 5ου ή 6ου αιώνα), όπως και η Ιερά Πρόθεση (Ιερό Βήμα). Στο ιερό υπάρχουν επίσης τοιχογραφίες εξαιρετικής τεχνοτροπίας, που έχουν διατηρηθεί σε ικανοποιητική κατάσταση (μέσα 17ου -18ος αιώνας). Έχει πρόσφατα ανακαινισθεί και λειτουργεί.
