THE ABSOLUTE CALM IN THE NATURE IS WORTH THE PLACE

The Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is built at an altitude of 720 meters on the northeast side of Parnassos in central Lokrida. It is 12 kilometers from Lower Tithorea. The construction of the buildings, it seems, was not completed at the same time. The Archaeological Service concludes that in 1708 the fortification was fully repaired and completed. The Monastery has the fortification features of the post-Byzantine period. The catholicon of the monastery is of Basilica style, while the illustration was made by folk painters with a post-Byzantine style. It seems that it belonged to an old Stavropegion and was found to be dedicated to the Monastery. The records of the General Archives of the State preserve information referring to its financial situation during its heyday and its role in both the difficult years of the Turkish occupation and its invaluable contribution to the national liberation struggle. After the years of the revolution, by decree of 1833 it was dissolved and its property was taken over by the state. An attempt was made in 1980 to renovate the Monastery. The Monastery has been declared a monument and today functions as a women's monastery. It is celebrated on the 15th and the 23rd of August. (Source of the Holy Metropolis of Fthiotida)
