Διαβαζουμε απο το μπλογκ naoistimani: Είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα κρυμμένα μυστικά της μανιάτικης γης. Όλοι θα περάσουν από τον Κότρωνα, αλλά σχεδόν κανείς δεν θα μπει στον κόπο να ανηφορίσει την πλαγιά του βουνού Αραβίκια, πάνω από το ωραίο παραθαλάσσιο χωριουδάκι.Ο ανηφορικός τσιμεντόδρομος καταλήγει στην νότια άκρη του βουνού στο μοναστήρι της, σε μια θέση με εκπληκτική θέα. Σαν από αεροπλάνο θα θαυμάζετε κάτω τον Κότρωνα και την Προσηλιακή Μάνη. Η μονή Μεταμορφώσεως Σωτήρα Γωνέας βρίσκεται πολύ κοντά στο χωριουδάκι Γωνέα. Διατηρεί εξαιρετικά την αρχιτεκτονική της φυσιογνωμία και γύρω από την πλακόστρωτη αυλή σώζονται παλιά κελιά, πολλές λίθινες σκάλες, θυρίδες και τοξωτά ανοίγματα, ενώ στο βόρειο μέρος υπάρχουν εκτενείς οχυρώσεις με επάλξεις και πολεμίστρες.Από εκεί η θέα αληθινά κόβει την ανάσα! Το καθολικό είναι ένα από τα ομορφότερα εκκλησιαστικά μνημεία της Μάνης και είναι στολισμένο με ένα πολύ μεγάλο πλήθος τοιχογραφιών πολύ καλά διατηρημένων με χρώματα που λάμπουν ολοζώντανα! Υπάρχουν δύο στρώματα τοιχογραφιών και χρονολογούνται πιθανώς στον 14ο αιώνα, εποχή που χτίστηκε η εκκλησία. Η Γωνέα, οικισµός της κώµης του Κότρωνα της περιοχής Τευθρώνης του δήµου ανατολικής Μάνης είναι ο τόπος καταφυγής κλάδου της οικογένειας των εκ Κρήτης Καλλέργηδων. Οι Καλλέργηδες περί τα μέσα του 17ου µ.Χ. αιώνα, καταδιώχθηκαν από τους Τούρκους, διέφυγαν από την Κρήτη στη Μάνη και εποίκησαν τον οικισµό της Γωνέας, που βρίσκεται σε δυσπρόσιτη αντηρίδα, της σειράς των λόφων της Αραβίκιας σε υψόµετρο 250µέτρων από τη θάλασσα και σε µικρή απόσταση από το µυχό του κόλπου της Κολοκυθιάς. Η µονή που βρίσκεται στα 370μ είναι καθαγιασµένη προς τιµήν της Μεταµόρφωσης του Σωτήρα και είναι ευχαριστήρια έκφραση των Καλλέργηδων προς το Σωτήρα Χριστό για τη διάσωσή τους από τους Τούρκους και τους κινδύνους, που πέρασαν στη θαλάσσια περιπέτειά τους µέχρι να φθάσουν από την Κρήτη στη Μάνη. Η µονή της Γωνέας είναι και σήµερα µεγαλόπρεπη, παρά την εγκατάλειψή της και την αδιαφορία της αρχαιολογικής υπηρεσίας και των τοπικών αρχών.
