Κτίστηκε στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα με σχέδια και επίβλεψη του μηχανικού Μιχάλη Σαββάκη για να στεγάσει το σπίτι και το γραφείο του. Ο ίδιος, εκτός του Δεσποτικού, είχε επιβλέψει πολλά από τα σημαντικότερα μνημεία των Χανίων μεταξύ των οποίων το Δικαστικό – Διοικητικό Μέγαρο και το σπίτι του βουλευτή Μανούσου Κούνδουρου. Το Δεσποτικό στην οδό Δημοκρατίας, μεταξύ του Δημοτικού κήπου και του Δικαστικού- Διοικητικού Μεγάρου, είναι μια βίλα τριών επιπέδων που διατηρεί το μορφή του πύργου, κτίσμα επηρεασμένο από ξένα πρότυπα. Περιβάλλεται από κήπο με τα φοινικοειδή. Το 1917 το Δεσποτικό πουλήθηκε στη μοναστηριακή επιτροπεία και από τότε μέχρι σήμερα στεγάζει την Μητροπολιτική οικία. Το Δεσποτικό έχει υποστεί αρκετές καταστροφές με το πέρασμα του χρόνου αλλά και τους βομβαρδισμούς του δευτέρου παγκοσμίου πολέμου, παρ’ όλα αυτά, εξακολουθεί να είναι ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά μνημεία της πόλης. Despotiko, the house where the current Metropolitan of Kydonia and Apokoronas lives, is a typical monument of the modern era of Chania. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century with plans and supervision of the engineer Michalis Savvakis to house his house and office. Apart from Despotiko, he had supervised many of the most important monuments of Chania, including the Court-Administrative Palace and the house of MP Manousos Koundouros. Despotiko on Dimokratias Street, between the Municipal Garden and the Court-Administrative Building, is a three-level villa that maintains the shape of a tower, a building influenced by foreign standards. It is surrounded by a garden with palm trees. In 1917 the Despotiko was sold to the monastic committee and since then until today it houses the Metropolitan House. Despotiko has suffered a lot of damage over time and the bombings of the Second World War, nevertheless, it is still one of the characteristic monuments of the city.
