The old Komotini mosque is an integral part of the city's history. Built next to the old slum (Imaret), today an ecclesiastical museum and just outside the footprint of the Byzantine wall, it is a place you should definitely visit. You can enjoy your coffee in one of the nearby cafes and sooner or later you will hear Imam invite the faithful to prayer.

One of the monumental mosques of Komotini is the Old Mosque. The mosque, located near Komotini fish market, is named after the Old Quarter. Yet the other great mosque of the city, Yeni Mosque, was built 25 years ago. There is Gazi Evrenos Bey Imaret, the conqueror of the city to the south of the mosque, and the historical baths which were demolished in recent years. The mosque was built in 1608-1609 and repaired in 1678 and 1854. In 1854, the Sultan Abdulmecit period, such as the New Mosque was expanded in the restoration took its present image. The single dome of the mosque; Examples of early Ottoman architecture in Iznik, Bursa, Edirne and Amasya were covered with tiles, such as. The grandson of Murad 4, Mehmet Bey, is a medfund in the mosque. Evliya Çelebi writes in her travel book that there is a fountain on the right side of the mosque. Until the Balkan War of 1912, the mosque had a minaret with a single balcony. The Bulgarians demolished this original minaret to the base and turned it into a bell tower and turned the mosque into a church. Like Gazi Evrenos Bey Mosque and İmâreti, they robbed this mosque and destroyed their ornaments. They removed the inscription on the door on the west side, and demolished the tomb of Şehzade Mehmed, the grandson of Murad 4 on the east side, with a bullet-covered, domed art work. They went further and dug the grave, collected the bones and sent it to the Bulgarian King Ferdinand in Sofia… The mosque remained a church for 6 years. In 1919 (before the end of the French period in Thrace), Thrace was given back to the Turkish Congregation by the French Commander General Sharpi on the application of the then-notable notables, before the Thrace became dominant in Greece. The interior decorations destroyed by the Bulgarians during the Balkan War were decorated with Kütahya tiles in 2002 with the contribution of Western Thrace Muslim-Turkish Minority 90

It is most likely to be the first mosque in Komotini. It is located in the center of Komotini and to this complex belonged also a hamam and a number of shops that surrounded these foundations. Also, according to an earlier reference to the mosque there was an inscription in a non-Ottoman language and it is probable that there was a Byzantine temple in this place. The mosque was first renovated in 1854, and is still in very good condition.
