The old Railway Station and Holocaust monument is the historical site where the first part of the Greek Jews deportation drama took place. Next to this station all Jewish citizens of Thessaloniki were consecutively assembled. Starting on March of 1943 they were squeezed in boxcars used for livestock transport and with 19 transport trains organized by the Nazi RSHA (Reich Main Security Office) they were shipped to extermination camp KZL Auschwitz - Birkenau (Oświęcim) in Poland. The overwhelming majority of them (96% of about 49.000 or more) perished in the Death Camp. The irony is that for all of these people official group tickets were issued from the Greek State Railroads which survived and are kept in the Auschwitz Museum.

A must-visit when in Thessaloniki. Very much so not crowded, but very interesting. Many trains are still at the defunct station
