Αυτό τα λέει όλα για τον πρύτανη του Ελληνικού αθλητισμού Όμιλο που επί 130 χρόνια συνεχίζει την πορεία του στον χρόνο καλλιεργώντας ένα και μοναδικό άθλημα, το άθλημα της Κωπηλασίας που οι ιδρυτές του έφεραν και γνώρισαν στην νεότερη Ελλάδα. 130 χρόνια πέρασαν από την εποχή που ένας εκ Γαλλίας Έλληνας, ο Παύλος Δαμαλάς (στην μνήμη του διεξάγονται κάθε χρόνο οι αγώνες του Ομίλου Ερετών, όπως επίσης και ένα διαρκές κύπελλο στο Παρίσι από την Γαλλική Ομοσπονδία) συγκέντρωσε μία ομάδα επιφανών Πειραιωτών και υλοποίησε μαζί τους την ιδέα της δημιουργίας ενός κωπηλατικού σωματείου. Στις τάξεις τους ο τότε δήμαρχος Πειραιά (και πρωτοπόρος της εκβιομηχάνισης του Πειραιά) Θεοδ. Ρετσίνας, ο Ναύαρχος Κουντουριώτης, ο στρατηγός Χατζηανέστης και άλλοι πολλοί. Έτσι, με βασιλικό διάταγμα του Γεωργίου Α΄ ιδρύεται ο Όμιλος Ερετών και του παραχωρείται ο χώρος στο λιμάνι Κανάρη, για να κτίσει το κτίριο στο οποίο στεγάζεται μέχρι σήμερα ( έχει χαρακτηρισθεί από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού ως διατηρητέο ιστορικής μνήμης). Το 1886 διοργανώνει τους 1ους Κωπηλατικούς αγώνες, με συμμετοχή πληρωμάτων των πολεμικών πλοίων Αγγλίας, Γαλλίας και Ρωσίας που ναυλοχούσαν τότε στον Φαληρικό Όρμο. Έχει καθοριστική συμμετοχή στην διοργάνωση των 1ων Ολυμπιακών αγώνων του 1896 αναλαμβάνοντας την διοργάνωση της Κωπηλασίας στο Φάληρο (δεν ετελέσθη λόγω δυσμενών καιρικών συνθηκών) με τον Πρόεδρο του Θ. Ρετσίνα στην οργανωτική επιτροπή και τον Π. Δαμαλά ψυχή της διοργάνωσης. Από τότε μέχρι σήμερα δεν διέκοψε ποτέ την λειτουργία του μέσα από πολέμους, κατοχές, καταστροφές κ.λ.π. Χαρακτηριστικά είναι τα δελτία ασκήσεων που φυλάσσονται στο πλούσιο ιστορικό αρχείο του Ομίλου Ερετών με ημερομηνίες της παραμονής της κήρυξης του πολέμου του 1940 και της επομένης, που φέρουν και αξιόλογες ιστορικά σημειώσεις. Πρωτοστάτησε τόσο στην ίδρυση της Ε.Κ.Ο.Φ.Ν.Σ. όσο και στην δημιουργία κωπηλατικών σωματείων πολλά από τα οποία είναι σε λειτουργία σήμερα. Το 1948 στην 1η μεταπολεμική Ολυμπιάδα του Λονδίνου, συμμετέχει με αμιγές πλήρωμα στο αγώνισμα της δικώπου μετά πηδαλιούχου (Διακουμάκος – Βενιέρης πηδ. Φιλιπούσης) ενώ στην Ολυμπιάδα του Λος Άντζελες, ο Κ. Κοντομανώλης καταλαμβάνει την 6η θέση στο αγώνισμα του σκιφ. Το 2003 το πλήρωμα του Ομίλου στο αγώνισμα της τετρακώπου μετά πηδαλιούχου Α.Μ.Ε.Α. κερδίζει το χάλκινο μετάλλιο στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα του Μιλάνου (Αξαγοράρης, Μοναχός, Γιουρούκης, Κιτρομηλίδης, πηδ. Πολλάκης) Για την ιστορική του παρουσία στον Ελληνικό Αθλητισμό, έχει τιμηθεί από την Ακαδημία Αθηνών, από τον Δήμο Πειραιά με το χρυσό αριστείο Α΄τάξεως, από την Ελλ. Θαλάσσια ΄΄Ενωση, από το Πολεμ. Ναυτικό και δεκάδες άλλους συλλόγους και φορείς. Επίσης τα Ελληνικά Ταχυδρομεία, του αφιέρωσαν το 1ο γραμματόσημο της σειράς «ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ ΑΘΛΗΤΙΚΑ ΣΩΜΑΤΕΙΑ» (με ονομαστική αξία 4€ ως κεφαλή της σειράς). Ο Όμιλος Ερετών διαθέτει ένα πλούσιο ιστορικό αρχείο που αποτελείται τόσο από χιλιάδες ιστορικά έγγραφα (πολλά από αυτά με όχι μόνο αθλητική αλλά και εθνική ιστορική σημασία) αλλά και αθλητικό υλικό, όπως π.χ. την τετράκωπο που συμμετείχε στην Ολυμπιάδα του 1928. Αποτελεί μόνιμη φιλοδοξία των εκάστοτε Δ.Σ. του Ομίλου η λειτουργία του Κωπηλατικού Μουσείου, ώστε να μπορέσουν να γίνουν όλοι κοινωνοί όχι μόνον του ίδιου του Ομίλου αλλά και της ιστορικής εξέλιξης του αθλήματος στην Ελλάδα. Θυμήθηκα τα παιδικά μου χρόνια που πέρασα, με προπονητή τον Διακουμάκο (το φωνακλά) , έναν ήρωα του ομίλου. Μέσα στις γιόλες, ατέλειωτες προπονήσεις, μέχρι τον όμιλο Αιγυπτιωτών στον Άγιο Κοσμά. Lots of nautical equipment shops and taverns. Reasonable prices and the staff is friendly and helpful. The promenade is nicely done. Easy access to public transport.
