Local stories tell of a German millionaire who bought the land and imported building talent to construct what is a stunningly well-made amphitheatre on a hill side below the village of Platsa, with a stunning audience view out to sea. There is plenty of marble and quality woodwork in the site which, from the outside, makes the site appear finished but, when we ventured through an unlocked door, we discovered plenty of interior spaces only half-completed. Toilets and lockers seem to have been installed but that's about it. Perhaps the developer ran out of cash? Whatever you think about the site, it is both a spectacular place for a picnic, even a private party (you can drive down the lane, there's no gate, and park on what would have been the stage), but also a colossally peculiar location for a theatre. This is the Mani, people - winding roads, thinly spread tourists and, at the site, little space for parking. Whatever the back story to this spot it is well worth a visit.
