The ancient ruins of Poseidon's temple is a little anticlimactic but still beautiful. Not so much in the way of signage or info at the temple. It's partly surrounded by a broken metal fence which is a little confusing and pointless. The beaches are beautiful, the water is lovely.

Closed but round the front the earth falls away from the fence and you can easily get in but not much in there to be honest, and what there is has not been preserved well. Not worth a detour if you weren't already there for the beautiful beach

Be sure to know where the ruins are, because nobody will be able to tell you, they actually have no idea. "Close to the lighthouse", they told us. We never found it. It was a very windy day, and the sand was whipping our legs. I wish we could have seen that place. Beautiful beach, though.

Reviews saying "nothing to see" are badly misrepresenting the place. The place is indeed unkept, to the point of seeming abandoned, but the foundations are visible and you can imagine the shape when it was functioning. It is fenced and closed and there's no staff, but you can get in from the beach, at one point there's a huge hole below the fence. There's probably more to be unearthed. Some better explanation of the history, including a plant/picture of how it used to look like one time would be great.

The place is fenced off and abandoned, it is such a pity as the location would be excellent if someone could shape this to be a tourist attraction. There is a gap under the fence located at the beach which is the only way to access the place but it is barely worth the effort. Sadly i was expecting far more once i decided to visit this place. A tourist attraction by the sea of archaeological value should have been at a much better state.

Access is currently rather illegal to get through a hole in the fence.

The temple, which is the most ancient temple of Poseidon, located in Possidi, in the area which in antiquity was called ancient Mende. The church operated for more than 1000 years, and there are references to it even by Thucydides and Athos documents of the 14th century. Probably built by settlers from Eretria, who colonized the Mende and had Neptune (Poseidon) as their protector. The excavations have brought to light four major buildings: the main temple, two buildings on either side of the temple and a vaulted building in the eastern part of it. The latter, which is the oldest, dating from the Geometric period (11th-10th c.). The floor is terracotta and the walls are made of large pebbles. The other buildings dating from the 7th-6th BC c., while the nave from the 5th BC c. All buildings had cult character and everywhere there are altars for sacrifices and places for sacred ceremonies. In 1864 a lighthouse was built on the edge of the cape and remains until today. I am disappointed to see this special archaeological site so abandoned!

Visited September 2020. This is across the road from the sea. The signage is bad. If you go slow looking on both sides of the road, you will find the small church stand on the paved road where you can park. Across from the sea is a forest area. Walk inside and you will find the sign for the Temple and the Sanctuary. Plus an information sign. The site is very small but you can see the foundation. On the other side from the Sanctuary in the trees is a lighthouse. BUT now it is under the Greek Navy. You can take pictures from a distance. A family is living inside and a big gate on the road. With information stating Greek Navy. No entrance.
