The second largest holocaust by the German occupiers in Greece (after that of Kalavrita) took place in the Kozani Towers! 368 people lost their lives on the two days 23-24 / 4/1944 in the martyrdom of Katranitsa.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The heart aches and the eye is teary as you look on the names of the victims on the monument that commemorates the memory of the 327 (some evidences say more) residents of the village of Pyrgoi (formerly Katranitsa), who were brutally massacred by the German Nazis and their Greek collaborators on 23 and 24 April 1944.
The village was almost completely destroyed and nearly 30% of its inhabitants, including men, women, children, babies and elder were brutally murdered.
Once a year a multi-participant ceremony is held at the site, to commemorate the memory of the fallen and to remind all of us the tragic consequences of that cruel and bloody war.
