Βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του Νομού, στη νοτιοδυτική πλευρά του Τυμφρηστού σε υψόμετρο 970 μέτρα[1]. Απέχει 78 χλμ από τη Λαμία και 111 χλμ από το Αγρίνιο, μέσω της Γέφυρας Επισκοπής. Η λέξη Καρπενήσι προέρχεται από την αρωμουνική λέξη kárpinu (οστρύα, γάβρος) + περιεκτική κατάληξη -iş, κι αυτή από τη λατινική carpinus, που σημαίνει γάβρος, οστρύα· είναι δηλαδή φυτωνύμιο. Συνεπώς, η ετυμολογικώς ορθή γραφή είναι Καρπενίσι. Το -η- εμφανίζεται από παρετυμολογία με την ελληνική λέξη νησί. Το Καρπενήσι, όπως και όλος ο νομός, βρίσκεται σε ορεινή περιοχή εξαιρετικού φυσικού κάλλους, πλούσια σε βλάστηση. Η παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονική έχει διατηρηθεί σε αρκετό βαθμό, τόσο στα γύρω χωριά όσο και μέσα στην πόλη, με πλήθος καλοδιατηρημένων κτιρίων. Σίγουρα δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι το διπλανό καφέ είναι γεμάτο, ενώ το Ρετρό σχεδόν άδειο. Καλά να πάθει! Το αποκορύφωμα όμως, ήταν ότι ενώ μας έκοψε απόδειξη για 9€, στην κάρτα χρέωσε 10€! Δυστυχώς το αντιληφθήκαμε την επόμενη μέρα όταν είδαμε τις αποδείξεις. Εκείνη τη στιγμή - έχοντας εμπιστοσύνη στον σερβιτόρο - δεν το κοιτάξαμε. Να προσέχετε τι σας χρεώνουν σε αυτό το μαγαζί.
