Unfortunately no one took care to water the cypress trees planted in memory of the Italian armies. Eventually 90% of the cypress trees have dried up .... Vergognia per la loro memoria .....

It is hard to believe that the humble monument that stands at the 60th kilometer on the road between Athens and Sounio, perpetuates the so tragic story of the death of nearly 4,100 Italian POWs who sank with the ship ORIA on February 9, 1944 at a distance of 2 km from the monument, on the southeast rocks of Patroklos island. It was one of the greatest maritime tragedies in world history, probably the fourth worst loss of life caused by the sinking of a single ship in the world, but it remained widely unknown. The Norwegian ship that was held by the Nazis, sailed from Rhodes directly to Piraeus, and was caught by a heavy storm that made it to crash. The remains of the shipwreck were discovered in 1999 by the Greek pro diver - Aristotelis Zervoudis, who was awarded for his dramatic discovery with the "Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy" by the President of Italy Sergio Mattarella in December 2017. A sad site that illustrates the suffering, sorrow and terrible price that is caused by wars.
