Nice place to visit - it's not crowded like usual "must see" locations, we were alone at our time. Just expect long driving until reach this point. But worth it because of view 360 :) just it's much colder than on the ground and strong winds.

This isolated observatory is one of the best places to stargaze in all of Greece. Perched on top of a mountain, with no amenities of any kind, so come prepared with water at least. The road up is precarious, at best, and you’ll be lucky to make it up without encountering another vehicle making their slow descent, but so worth the trip. You’ll find it virtually abandoned most days, with 360 views of the surrounding mountains and villages.

What a view! Such a great silence! My favorite place. It feels like being on top of the world.

A beautiful area that is worth visiting and is worthy of the long road trip. Caution, it gets windy and cold up there regardless of summer in the rest of crete

An amazing place on the top of the mountain with an astronomical observatory. Access by car is limited - check when it is allowed. From the top, the views are breathtaking. Even in the summer cold and strong wind can blow. With good air visibility you can see both seas. Access road in places in bad condition. The observatory organizes sightseeing for tourists once a year

Tuesday 31 August - the Observatory is not open, the hours listed here in Google are a joke. I drove there from Nida and I was there - together with another couple in a car from 12-13:30. I ate my lunch, relaxed, the other couple walked around. There was one man who did not even respond to my "hello" and didn't want to speak to the Greek couple whom he also ignored as if none of us existed. There is on none of the buildings any information about a schedule or any opening hours or tours. Also : August 2021 : no matter what you read online, the road from the direction of Zaros is NOT PAVED!!! I made the better part of this trip today and it is 95% dirt road and random stones ; it has tiny tiny portions where it's "handmade" cement and no real pavement. See photos.

The road leading to the observatory is definately not in the best condition but totally doable in a regular car. Just drive slowly and watch for oncoming traffic. We went there on middle of August 2021 and nobody was around and no cars on the whole road. Awesome views!

The best place on the island I've found so far. The way there is absolutely awesome and the view is fantastic. Of course, you can't get into the Max Planck Research Institute. But that's not bad. Up here you feel like the king of the world :)
