★ ★ ★ ★ ★ You'll get good food and coffee just about anywhere in Crete, but the best food is where the locals eat, not in the tourist precincts. Explore the inner alleys, you will be rewarded with beautiful old houses, and come across some small ouzeri and taverns. Very enjoyable. Finding your way back to the main street may be a problem after a few drinks, but just adds to the adventure. The locals are very friendly and helpful. Most can speak English. Some things worth trying are the ouzo or raki, octopus, fish, dips, feta with chili peppers, it's best to go for a variety of small dishes called mezethes, rather than a main dish.
