★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Η παράδοση λέει πως έζησε και μαρτύρησε στα χρόνια του Ρωμαίου αυτοκράτορα Δεκίου (249-251 μ.Χ.). Στη διάρκεια ενός πολέμου συνελήφθη αιχμάλωτος μαζί με άλλους στρατιώτες και μεταφέρθηκε στην Αντιόχεια όπου βαπτίστηκε από τον εκεί επίσκοπο, ιερομάρτυρα Βαβύλα. Πήρε τότε το όνομα Χριστόφορος ή Χριστοφόροςεγκαταλείποντας το προηγούμενο όνομά του που ήταν Ρέπροβος.
Λέγεται ότι η αφορμή για τον αποκεφαλισμό του (το έτος 250 μ.Χ.) ήταν η μεταστροφή στον χριστιανισμό.
Ο Άγιος Χριστοφόρος περιγράφεται και εικονίζεται πολλές φορές και ως κυνοκέφαλος, προφανώς λόγω της σύνδεσής του με το έθνος των Σκυλοκεφάλων. Εντοπίζεται έτσι σε τοιχογραφίες, φορητές εικόνες ακόμα και σε μικρογραφίες χειρογράφων. Όλες αυτές οι αναπαραστάσεις προέρχονται από την περίοδο της ύστερης Τουρκοκρατίας, ιδίως του 17ου και 18ου αιώνων, σε λαϊκές επαρχιακές ζωγραφιές.
Tradition says that he lived and witnessed during the years of Roman Emperor Decius (249-251 AD). During the war he was taken prisoner along with other soldiers and transferred to Antioch where he was baptized by the bishop there, the martyr Babylon. He then took the name Christopher or Christopher abandoning his former name which was Repros.
It is said that the reason for his beheading (in 250 AD) was the conversion to Christianity.
Saint Christopher is often described and portrayed as a headache, apparently due to his association with the nation of Dogs. It is thus found in frescoes, portable images and even in handwritten thumbnails. All these representations come from the period of the late Turkish occupation, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, in popular provincial paintings.
