★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Theotokos taverna is located in a beautiful spot among maple and chestnut trees, on the slopes of the Taygetos mountain. There are plenty of tables out on the balcony but also a large indoors area for when the weather gets colder.
The menu is basic however the taste will not disappoint! The taverna really does offer homemade food without the touristy pretensions. Especially the rooster in wine sauce with macaroni is superb. Ask for extra grated cheese on top and you will be well rewarded. If you fancy grilled meats then the pork chop is a treat.
Also go for whatever the available (depending on the season) boiled vegetables as they also tend to be great. By the way the water they serve you comes from the mountain spring situated just at the other side of the road opposite the taverna.
The Theotokos is about halfway on the mountain pass between Kalamata and Sparta, one of the most beautiful routes in Greece. If you choose to take this road instead of the motorway, then stopping at the Theotokos for a basic but very tasty meal is a very good option.
