ENG. Founded in the 6th century BC on land at sea level, the temple was mentioned by Pausanias and Herodotus, who claim that after the battle of Salamis, the Persians confused the rocks of the promoter with Greek ships. The name Zoster comes from the golden belt (zoster) that Leto was wearing, who became pregnant with Zeus. During the late Roman Empire the temple was transformed into a church. It is now located inside a nautical recreation center. RO.

Of course the visit is worth it. Admission is free as long as you inform the entrance. There by the sea our ancestors honored Apollo. The Temple of Apollo Zostiras is the ancient Greek temple located inside the beach of Asteras in Vouliagmeni. The temple was discovered in 1924, when children from the Vouliagmeni Orphanage were playing on the shore, which is now known to us as Astir Beach. The temple is almost at sea level and so, often in the past, it was flooded with rainwater or sea water. According to information, it was founded in the sixth century BC. during the archaic era. The inscriptions, which were found in the ruins, confirm that the area is the Temple of Apollo Zostiras. The first excavations from 1926 to 1927 confirmed the references to ancient literary sources. Pausanias mentions that this was the location of the most important sanctuary of the municipality of Alon Aixonides, the area with the natural salt flats of Aixoni. The ancient municipality of Alon Aixonides, which was located between the municipalities of Aixoni and Anagyrountos, included the sites where the areas of Voula and Vouliagmeni are today. Pausanias believed that in this position and as he was being persecuted by the angry goddess Hera, Leto, who was pregnant by Zeus, loosened her gilded belt. Leto was ready to give birth to her twin children, Apollo and Artemis, who according to the prevailing legend were finally born in Delos.

Small but cool to check out. Required to get a ticket to Astir beach first as it is on their property.

Uhhh it’s cool I guess as a ruin, but it’s on the private property of the beach so you have to pay to get up close, otherwise you can see it from the fence. I wish there was a historical plaque or something to tell me a little more about this place and it’s significance.

How can you miss this place when in Athens? As you stand on these ruins now you wonder why was this temple was placed by the beach? One can answer that in that temple the sunrise and the sunset are visible hence the temple of the Sun God was always bathed by Sun rays.
