★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Theatre looks amazing, but it is being reconstructed at the moment, and it won't be finished soon. So its better to wait 2019 to see it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The ancient theater of Thassos is located on the west slope of the hill of ancient Thassos’ acropolis, 500 m east to the town of Limenas.
The oldest phase of the theater is dated to the beginning of the Hellenistic period (first quarter of the 3rd century BC).
The first excavation at the site took place in 1921 by a French Archaeological School. The site was reconstructed in the last few yearsand The theater hosts nowaday local festivals, concerts and performances that take place over the year.
The theater has a capacity of 2000 viewers and in order to arrive there you need to walk uphill few hundred meters, and to climb about 130 steps, but the beauty of the site and the panoramic view worth that!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The way to the ancient theater (quite difficult) starts from the marina, behind the Town Museum, where you often have the opportunity to see two locals playing backgammon. The climb follows a narrow, typically Greek street, and continues on some sort of stone steps. Once you get to the theater, you have the opportunity, after visiting, to continue on the same road to the ruins of the ancient Acropolis and the temple of the goddess Athena. Once you get to the theater, you can not fail to notice a few aspects: 1. the giant wish for beauty and art of so-called primitive people, since they accepted to made such an effort to enjoy them. 2. the special aesthetic sense that the same people showed, the panorama that can be admired from the places being superb. 3. the inscriptions carved in the stone of some places with the names of certain families, these being what we call "reserved places", which proves that the viewing of the theater shows at that time was not a hazardous act but a consistent activity.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice views from the theatre, but the place itself looks a bit like unfinished construction site. If you take the longer route closer to the sea you will also pass some nice cafe/restaurant on the rock with a pleasant view on the sea and the town.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice ancient place on the top of the hill. The walk uphill may be a bit tiring but I recommend taking the longer way up with few stops for great views and then shortcut on the way back to the city. It’s a bit a shame that the reconstruction of the theater hasn’t been finished and the crane in the middle just looks like abandoned construction site. I hope one day it will be nicely done!
