★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The ancient theater of Sikyon (Sicyon) is a real hidden treasure, located 500m west to the village Sicyon, beside the archaeological site of ancient Sikyon, on a slope of a hill.
The theater was built at the Hellenistic period, between 303 and 251 BC and was restructured at least twice by the Romans in the 1st century BC and in the late Roman period (2nd century A.D.).
The theater was considered one of the biggest in Peloponnese and it contained a huge seating area, spanning 122 m wide and 58m deep. There is still no estimate of the number of viewers it could accommodate, but it contained between 40 to 60 rows!
It was partially excavated, starting at 1886 by the American School of Classical Studies, and further excavations were made later on by the Archaeological Society at Athens at 1920 and 1984.
Much of the finds discovered in the excavations are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Sikyon (located nearby).
The theater has been used in the past for theatrical and musical events, as well as assembly place for the citizens of Sicyon and it has magnificent panoramic view towards the northeast, to the Corinthian Gulf and the summits of the mountains of Roumeli.
Bottom line:
Impressive theater with great historical past and high tourist potential. However, despite the many excavations carried out on the site, much restoration and reconstruction work is still needed to regain its glory.
Due to the shaky state of the site, its use for performances and events is prohibited nowadays and only simple visits are allowed.
