They are located on a peninsula in southern Corfu. There were salt pans there until 1988 when they stopped operating permanently. The area includes dunes, streams, lake, where birds and other animals find shelter.

The area is Alykes Lefkimmi, an enormous area of about 1050 acres, where besides the open-air saltfields that once existed, it included two large venetian salt stores, a third building used as a commune, the ruins of which survive up to today, the old weighbridge, the threshing-thresher, where the workers took the salt, the engine-room, the pumping station and the guard-room from where the guards controlled the salt pits.

Οι αλυκές ήταν σε συνεχή λειτουργεία από τους μεσαιωνικούς αιώνες και την εποχή των Ανδεγαυών (13ος-14ος αιώνας) μέχρι και το 1988, όταν παράχθηκε για τελευταία φορά αλάτι και σταμάτησε το επάγγελμα των αλυκάρηδων, όπως ονομάζονταν οι ντόπιοι εργάτες. Κάποια από τα τηγανια φαίνονται ακόμη. Κρίμα όμως για την εγκατάλειψη. The Salts of Lefkimi are located in the south of the island, spread over an area of 1,300 acres, their perimeter reaches 6 km and are separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand a few meters wide. The saltworks were in continuous operation from the medieval centuries and the Andean era (13th-14th century) until 1988, when salt was last produced and the profession of salt miners, as the local workers were called, ceased. Some of the pans are still visible. But a pity for the abandonment.
