Το λαμπρό παρελθόν της πόλης διαγράφεται γλαφυρά στα σπίτια του 17ου και 18ου αιώνα, τα οποία χτίστηκαν από διάσημους Μακεδόνες και Ηπειρώτες μάστορες. Οι πλούσιοι έμποροι γουνοποιοί που επέστρεφαν από την Ευρώπη φέρνοντας μαζί τους έπιπλα, διακοσμητικά και φρέσκες ιδέες, στόλιζαν το εσωτερικό των σπιτιών με ζωγραφιές και τοποθετούσαν εντυπωσιακά ξυλόγλυπτα στις οροφές, τα ντουλάπια και τα τζάκια.
