★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ancient Sparta unlike other Greek sites is “Spartan” compared to archeological remains. Leonidas & his magnificent 300 lived here amongst this landscape. The deep blue skies, the ancient olive groves, sparse agriculture & structures encapsulates the Spartan life. Its a tough environment to live in... You will be disappointed if you expect some glorious ruins to welcome you with some ancient story. An open mind will actually eradicate your fears as you walk along the ancient groves & climb the hillock where they once dwelled.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had a wonderful time exploring! Unlike other archeological sights, visitors are allowed to actually touch, sit on and climb the ruins.
My family really enjoyed sitting in the theater, imagining we were back in time, watching actors on the stage and sitting with 17,000 other spectators. My husband even climbed on the stage and gave us a little performance! There's also some remains of a church, which the kids enjoyed climbing on and a 3 roomed structure which was quite interesting!
Luckily we visited on a cloudy day--- without the clouds it would be unbearably hot *brig a hat and some water! Kids did well with closed toe shoes--I was fine with flip flops.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not so interesting for today’s travelers, but worth visiting if you go around. It’s better to take the guide to know anything about it, not just walking around a lot of rocks.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ To enter the site head to the Statue of Leonidas and you should see a sign to the archeological site on the left.
It’s worth visiting if you are in the area but the Archeological site of Mystras nearby is much more impressive.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really beautiful but underrated place. Feels more like a park, it's free entry and very few people were around in the middle of the day. Quite chill and meditative, filled with olive trees that give shade on a hot day. Don't miss this!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not sure why this place isn't more popular! It's a free park to walk around ancient sparta. There are many different walking trails and nobody around except a couple of joggers every now and then.
The old olive trees add a very nice ambiance to the place.
