Οι Πλαταιές καταστράφηκαν το 431 στον Πελοποννησιακό πόλεμο, όπου όσοι είχαν απομείνει να τις υπερασπιστούν (τα γυναικόπαιδα είχαν καταφύγει στην Αθήνα) σφαγιάστηκαν από τους Σπαρτιάτες. Η σημερινή ανάδειξη της περιοχής, θαρρώ, δε συνάδει με την ιστορική σημασία της για Ελλάδα και Ευρώπη. 479 BC The last battle with the retreating Persians takes place in Plataea. The Greeks finally defeat the large army of Xerxes. A decisive battle for the future and prosperity of Greece and, according to historians, of Europe and of European history and identity. Plataea was destroyed in 431 in the Peloponnesian War, where those who had remained to defend them (the women and children had taken refuge in Athens) were slaughtered by the Spartans. The current development of the region, I dare say, is not in line with its historical significance for Greece and Europe.

Δυστυχώς όμως είναι εντελώς παραμελημένος.. Huge archeological site with walls of the 5th century BC and ruins of later buildings, probably from the Byzantine era. Unfortunately, however, it is completely neglected.
