Old fortress of Hora (Kithira). A must see. Mild to moderate walk to fortress but the views are amazing.

The fortress of Kythera, a historical journey to the past! Don’t miss to watch a sunset from the castle!

One of the best choras of the Greek Islands i have ever visited. It is beautiful at sunset time.

Chora is the big city in the island. Both roads that lead to the city, have majestic views of the castle and city. Only downside, is the fact that everything is closed inside the castle, apart from a small church and a small heraldic musuem (not worth the 3€).

The biggest castle on kythira. Best to visit on a weekday when quiet. Unbelievable views from the top, and the castle ruins make for great photos and memories, nice to go to kapsali for lunch/dinner after.

I love castles and I ve been visiting quite many in Greece and abroad. But I was really disappointed from this castle in Chora Kythiron. Driving up is great with nice view of the castle and the city from under. The castle itself is nothing special, except of the view down to Kapsali. It doesn't offer any interest, it looks completely abandoned: all benches from wood are not fresh looking, bending, or some small piece of wood sticking out, the iron basis are rusty. They have boxes/ cages from iron around the lights ( giving light during evening to the castle), all of them completely rusty, very old.. There are some metal fence around, rusty too. There is a kiosk at the entrance ( was closed though), falling apart, old varnish gone.. It's pity, really pity, since maintaining these things doesn't cost a fortune and in 1-2 days easily fixed.. You can visit, but don't expect anything super...

The Castle of Kythira is the most characteristic monument of the island. It is built on a large elevated area in Chora of Kythira, overlooking the south. The castle was called "Fortezza" (Fortress in Italian), like many other Venetian castles in other parts of Greece. It also had the nickname "Eye of Crete" because of its strategic position that allowed the observation of navigation in three seas at the same time: Ionian, Aegean and Cretan. Today (June 2022) shows signs of abandonment, free entrance, view unlimited.
