This is the oldest and most interesting church of Naxos dedicated to the Virgin Mary! It has been operating since 1052 AD .. and its walls are decorated with very old frescoes of the 10th, 11th and 13th century! It is a real gem and it is worth visiting, devoting a little time to anyone who visits Halki!

Κτίστηκε στην παλαιοχριστιανική εποχή ως τρίκλιτη ξυλόστεγη βασιλική, και τον 9ο αιώνα μετατράπηκε σε σταυροειδή εγγεγραμμένη με τρούλο. Υπάρχουν και δύο πρόσθετα κλίτη που κτίστηκαν μεταγενέστερα. Στο εσωτερικό της σώζονται 5 στρώματα τοιχογραφιών: παλαιοχριστιανικών χρόνων, ανεικονικές του 9ου αιώνα, του 10ου, 11ου, και 13ου αιώνα. Η τοιχογραφία που απεικονίζει την Παναγία με τη ρόκα στο χέρι (Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου), στην κόγχη του ιερού, θεωρείται μοναδική στα Βαλκάνια. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση ονομάζεταιΠρωτόθρονη γιατί είναι η πρώτη εκκλησία που κτίστηκε στη Νάξο, ενώ αποδεδειγμένα λειτουργεί αδιάλειπτα από το 1052 μ.Χ. Panagia Protothronos in Chalki, is one of the most important churches on the island. It was built in the early Christian era as a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica, and in the 9th century it was transformed into a cruciform inscribed with a dome. There are also two additional aisles built later. Inside, 5 layers of frescoes survive: early Christian times, non-iconic of the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 13th centuries. The fresco depicting the Virgin Mary with the rocket in her hand (Annunciation of the Virgin Mary), in the niche of the sanctuary, is considered unique in the Balkans. According to tradition, it is called Protothroni because it is the first church built in Naxos, while it is proven that it has been operating continuously since 1052 AD.
