The Tower was built in 1884-1885 during the Ottoman modernization by Abdul Cadir Kemal Pasha and dedicated to Sultan Abdul Hamit II.
The clock tower is part of the central mosque of the city of Komotini known as Yeni Camii ("Yeni Mosque" ie "New Mosque") that existed before the 16th century.

Ο Πύργος κατασκευάστηκε την περίοδο 1884-1885, την περίοδο του οθωμανικού εκσυγχρονισμού, από τον Αμπντούλ Καδίρ Κεμάλ Πασά και αφιερώθηκε στο σουλτάνο Αμπντούλ Χαμίτ Β’. Ο Πύργος του ρολογιού αποτελεί τμήμα του κεντρικού τεμένους της πόλης της Κομοτηνής που είναι γνωστό ως Yeni Camii («Γενί τζαμί» δηλαδή «Νέο τζαμί») που προϋπήρχε (16ος αι.). Στον Πύργο διακρίνονται δύο οικοδομικές φάσεις και αφορούν στην απόληξη της κατασκευής. Η αρχική απόληψη οκταγωνική απόληξη («καμπανίλε») με τρούλο, αντικαταστάθηκε στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του '50 με περίοπτο περίπτερο, τετραγωνικής κάτοψης, με πεσσούς.
The tower is located on Ermou Street, in the commercial center of the city, within an area that has been designated as a historic site by ministerial decision. The tower was built between 1884 and 1885, the period of Ottoman modernization, by Abdul Qadir Kemal Pasha and was dedicated to Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The Clock Tower is part of the central mosque of the city of Komotini, known as the Yeni Camii ("Geni Mosque"), which pre-existed (16th century). In Pyrgos there are two construction phases and they concern the end of the construction. The original octagonal end ("bell") with a dome was replaced in the mid-1950s with a prominent kiosk with square pillars.
