★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Το Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης (Δ.Π.Θ.) ιδρύθηκε τον Ιούλιο του 1973 με το Νομοθετικό Διάταγμα υπ' αριθ. 87 της 27 Ιουλίου 1973 και ξεκίνησε τη λειτουργία του το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 1974 - 1975. Ονομάστηκε Δημοκρίτειο προς τιμή του αρχαίου Έλληνα φυσικού φιλοσόφου Δημοκρίτου, ο οποίος καταγόταν από τα Άβδηρα της Θράκης.
Το ΔΠΘ και η διοίκηση του έχει ώς έδρα τους την Κομοτηνή, η οποία είναι η πρωτεύουσα της Διοικητικής Περιφέρειας Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και Θράκης. Ως Ανώτατο Εκπαιδευτικό Ίδρυμα, είναι Νομικό Πρόσωπο Δημοσίου Δικαίου με πλήρη αυτοδιοίκηση. Εποπτεύεται και επιχορηγείται από το Κράτος δια του Υπουργείου Εθνικής Παιδείας και Θρησκευμάτων.
Το ΔΠΘ παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στην ενίσχυση της εθνικής και πολιτιστικής φυσιογνωμίας της περιοχής της Θράκης και συμβάλλει στο υψηλό επίπεδο των σπουδών ανώτατης εκπαίδευσης στην Ελλάδα. Με την ποιότητα διδασκαλίας και το επίπεδο έρευνας του, έχει εξασφαλίσει μια θέση μεταξύ των καλύτερων Ελληνικών ΑΕΙ.
Ακαδημαϊκά και διοικητικά όργανα του Πανεπιστημίου είναι η Σύγκλητος, το Πρυτανικό Συμβούλιο και ο Πρύτανης. Βάσει του ΦΕΚ Τεύχος Α 124/03-06-2013 στο ΔΠΘ λειτουργούν σήμερα οχτώ Σχολές και δεκαοκτώ Τμήματα σε τέσσερις πόλεις της Θράκης - επτά στην Κομοτηνή, πέντε στην Ξάνθη, τέσσερα στην Αλεξανδρούπολη και δύο στην Ορεστιάδα. Σήμερα φοιτούν περισσότεροι από 15.000 ενεργοί φοιτητές (το 2014 ήταν εγγεγραμένοι 27.000[1] φοιτητές, από τους οποίους οι 4.000 ήταν μεταπτυχιακοί και διδακτορικοί).
The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was founded in July 1973 with the Legislative Decree no. 87 of July 27, 1973 and began its academic year 1974 - 1975. It was named Democritus in honor of the ancient Greek natural philosopher Democritus, who came from Abdera in Thrace.
The DUTH and its administration are based in Komotini, which is the capital of the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. As a Higher Education Institution, it is a Legal Entity under Public Law with full self-government. It is supervised and subsidized by the State through the Ministry of National Education and Religions.
The DPTH plays an important role in strengthening the national and cultural identity of the Thrace region and contributes to the high level of higher education in Greece. With its teaching quality and level of research, it has secured a place among the best Greek universities.
Academic and administrative bodies of the University are the Senate, the Rector's Council and the Rector. According to the Official Gazette Issue A 124 / 03-06-2013, there are currently eight Schools and eighteen Departments in four cities of Thrace - seven in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupolis and two in Orestiada. Today, more than 15,000 active students are enrolled (in 2014, 27,000 [1] students were enrolled, of whom 4,000 were postgraduate and doctoral).
