One of the most beautiful lakes I’ve ever seen in Greece! The name Drakolimni (aka dragon lake) originated from the myth that the lake was created during the fight between the dragon that inhabited mountain Tymfi and the dragon of mountain Smolikas. It’s situated at the edge of a huge vertical cliff, it’s like an infinity pool at a 2000m altitude. Home the alpine newts, you can spot them at the shores of the lake. The hiking path to the lake starts from Mikro Papigko village and is rather difficult but with a few stops along the way most of the people will be able to complete it in a single day!

Fantastic landmark, true and rare beauty! But bare in mind that if you are not an experienced hiker, you are gonna need 4h to the refuge, and then 2.5h to go back and forth to the lake. So start early and enjoy your day!!

Tough trail, we did all of it on the same day The lake itself was somewhat disappointing :( maybe better to come at spring time when water are fresh and snow is around. The view though from the other side is awesome

An amazing experience, a simple climb to one of the wildest and most beautiful landscapes. Caution for the inexperienced to prefer the summer. The signs indicate approximately the correct time

One dragon is located in the alpine mead of Tymfi, at an altitude of 2,050 m, ND of the top of Ploskos (2,377 m), Astrakas AE (2,436 m), N of the monastery of Stomiou, 3,5 hours and ABD of the Gamila peak (2.497 m), which is also the highest peak of Tymphi. It is a bustling mountaineering destination and is known for the alpine Tetons that hosts its waters. The lake is 1 hour's walk from the organized shelter of Astrakas and 4 hours of hiking from Mikro Papingo. Access is only possible on foot

The lake together with the wonderful landscape that surrounds it is a miracle of nature. There are not many dragon lakes in Greece and the specific is one of the most beautiful !
