Ο ναός φαίνεται να είναι κτισμένος πάνω σε παλαιοχριστιανικό ναό. Στον κατάλογο του 1686 αναφέρεται ως εκκλησιά παλαιά και χαλασμένη. Πολύ πιθανό όμως να ανακαινίστηκε από την οικογένεια Βελλιανίτη. Ο Άγιος Νικόλαος γεννήθηκε το 270 μ.Χ. στα Πάταρα της Λυκίας. Σε νεαρή ηλικία έμεινε ορφανός. Από πολύ νωρίς είχε αφιερωθεί στα Θεία. Στην αρχή αφιερώθηκε στον ασκητικό βίο κατόπιν έγινε ηγούμενος της Μονής Σιών στα Μύρα της Λυκίας κατόπιν αναγορεύτικε αρχιεπίσκοπος. Εμψύχωνε τους διωκόμενους από τους Ρωμαίους χριστιανούς, διωκόμενος και εξοριζόμενος και ο ίδιος για τη στάση του αυτή. Ανέπτυξε έντονη δράση για την προστασία των φτωχών και απόρων ιδρύοντας νοσοκομεία και φιλανθρωπικά ιδρύματα. Πέθανε στις 6 Δεκεμβρίου του έτους 343. Τα λείψανά του διατηρήθηκαν στα Μύρα της Λυκίας, το 1087 ναύτες τα αφαίρεσαν και τα μετέφεραν στην Ιταλία, στην πόλη Μπάρι, όπου τοποθετήθηκαν στο Ναό του Αγίου Στεφάνου. Η γιορτή του αγ.
