★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Η ανασκαφή του χώρου πραγματοποιήθηκε το 1906 από τον αρχαιολόγο G. Dickins που θεώρησε ότι πρόκειται για τον Βωμό του Λυκούργου λόγω των μνημειακών διαστάσεών του (23,90 Χ 6,70 μέτρα) και της μορφή του κτιρίου χρονολογώντας το στον 2ο αιώνα π.Χ.
Το Βωμό του Λυκούργου είχε δει στην περιοχή αυτή ο Έλληνας περιηγητής και γεωγράφος Παυσανίας όταν είχε επισκεφθεί την αρχαία Σπάρτη την ρωμαϊκή περίοδο τον 2ο αιώνα μ.Χ.
Σύμφωνα όμως με πρόσφατη έρευνα, ο προσανατολισμός, οι αναλογίες και η διαρρύθμιση του κτηρίου παραπέμπουν σε οικοδόμημα ναού.
Εργασίες συντήρησης πραγματοποιήθηκαν το 2000-2006 στο πλαίσιο του υποέργου "Ανάδειξη - Ανάπλαση αρχαιολογικών χώρων και μνημείων της περιοχής του Ευρώτα στη Σπάρτη".

The excavation of the site was carried out in 1906 by archaeologist G. Dickins who considered it to be the Altar of Lycurgus due to its monumental dimensions (23.90 X 6.70 meters) and the shape of the building dating it to the 2nd century BC. .
The Altar of Lycurgus was seen in this area by the Greek traveler and geographer Pausanias when he visited ancient Sparta during the Roman period in the 2nd century AD.
However, according to recent research, the orientation, proportions and layout of the building refer to a temple building.
Maintenance work was carried out in 2000-2006 in the context of the sub-project "Promotion - Reconstruction of archeological sites and monuments in the area of Evrotas in Sparta".
