At the entrance of the picturesque village of Ano Pedina, in Zagori, on the edge of Kato Mahala, stands the impressive Monastery of Evangelistria, an outstanding example of the traditional architecture of Zagorohoria. The era of its foundation is unknown, but it is believed to have been built in this place before 1700. Its katholikon, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin, was built in 1793, as the landmark inscription informs us. Here was one of the most important representatives of modern Greek enlightenment, Neophytos Doukas, who originated from Ano Pedina and was devoted to the monastery by his widowed mother at the age of ten. During the period 1820-1822, the monastery was at the center of the controversy between Ali Pasha of Ioannina and the Sultan. Around the middle of the 19th century it had acquired a great fortune and in 1857 it was annexed to it and the deserted neighboring Monastery of Agia Paraskevi. In 1930 he became a member of the Vellas Monastery and in 1997-2004 he worked as a feminine. The monastery has the appearance of a fortress as it is protected by high walls built in 1783 or 1786 and by tall cell blocks. The universal, spacious basilica with dome and narthex is decorated internally with beautiful hagiographies, which, as the inscriptions next to the entrance, are mentioned in 1809 by the local painter Lazaros Papaioannou and his nephew Lazo Kanki, sponsored by Christodoulos Marinos from Kapesovo and wife of Catherine - even the sponsor is depicted next to the inscription under his name. Also remarkable is the depiction of ancient Greek philosophers and historians in the left aisle, in a small inner dome, while interesting are also the temple, the episcopal throne and the pulpit, wonderful works of wood sculpture of the early 19th century. In the monastery there are remarkable portable icons of the 18th century, a gospel with silver lining and two relics of the 19th century
