★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The square has changed a lot during the last 30 years. I live there since 1990 and now it is a little bit more secure, still one must be careful in the small alleys around it because it is a little dirty square and you can still see homeless people and drunk beggars.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you know what the square is and you still want to go, this is the place for you. In truth it’s usually dirty and sparsely occupied. It is the home to a couple good cafes, non-discreet drug dealers, the homeless, very occasional trash can fires, and anarchist rallies. It is typically covered in a patchwork of posters, and it is common to see large banners by anarchists hanging between light posts and trees. Some of the most real and coolest parts of the city happen right here at the heart. Exarchia is a very unique neighborhood with a seriously alternative vibe that probably won’t survive much longer in the city center. They are proposing a metro station in the square. If you’re here, I recommend seeing it before it sinks too far into tourism and major development. And if you are a tourist, just try not to ruin it man.
