About Fine Mess Smokehouse
The striking gastronomic impressions of a US road-trip that spanned six weeks and twenty-one thousand kilometers across thirty-nine States back in 2015 ignited the spark of inspiration.
Plenty of soul-searching and culinary experimentation followed, giving birth to Fine Mess Smokehouse in 2019.
Ever since then, we've been barbecuing in our custom-designed offset smokers using seasoned beech wood. The fire is set at dawn every morning and we take all day. With great barbecue there are no shortcuts.
We set our table and welcome you to Fine Mess, the contemporary expression of authentic low & slow barbecue.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We visited the place with the Dine Athens menu. It's a Very nice place on a sidewalk with excellent service. We had dishes with pork, beef and turkey all tastefully, starters also. Overall an excellent choice.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We went in on the spur of the moment. Superior service started as soon as we entered.
The atmosphere was cozy, with modern elements and decorations. Nicely lit and with comfortable chairs, our table allowed us a view through the glass wall into the adjoining smoker space, the glow of the wood coals visible through the gaps around the firebox door. Several times during our meal we watched the chef pulling meat out of the smoking chamber.
We started with the quinoa, kale and cheese salad with a tart black cherry dressing. Well balanced acidity and sweetness, tempered by the cheese. Also, we enjoyed the surprising brie brulee with poached pear, and the homemade gnocchi were light, with a house smoked mozzarella and a light cheese sauce.
Our main courses, shared tasting style, included the smoked short rib, the Carolina spare ribs, with one of our party opting for the Gentlemen's Mac starter as a main.
The short rib was smoked to perfection, with fall apart tenderness and fat well rendered into juiciness throughout. Well seasoned and flavored by the adjoining sauce, and by the bourbon in the cooking process, this was the stand out dish of the meal. Served on top of a bed of Forbidden Rice risotto, itself cooked perfectly with a nice chewy bite to the rice, and with several dollops of sauces, allowing flavor combinations which were all tasty and balanced.
The Carolina ribs were prepared dry style, moist inside, with the taste of the cider viniger and apple juice basting coming through the wood smoke. This was served with a smear of a puree of corn which was the essence of corn flavor, and the house take on potatoe salad. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, which allows the salad to stay together rather than become mush, and had a nice balance of fresh herb and light mayo and viniger style dressing. Well flavored and not heavy, this was an excellent interpretation of the classic BBQ side dish. The potatoe salad was topped by a soft yolked panko coated and deep fried egg.
Dessert was the apple crumble, which requires ordering 40 minutes prior to serving as this is prepared to order. The apples inside were cooked well, but not too soft, and the oven browned crumble on top was tender and well flavored with cinnamon. This was served with a fully flavored salted caramel ice cream or gelato.
The house also has a very nice mixed drink menu, some including smoked flavors as you would expect from a smoke house. Two of our party opted for alcohol free alternatives, of which there was a selection including mocktails. Our waitress brought us some after dinner drinks, vermouth for the drinkers, and cherry juice for the non drinkers.
Service was very attentive without being intrusive, friendly, and knowledgeable.
This was our best meal in Athens during our stay here, both as a dining experience and in terms of the food. We can not recommend this restaurant enough. We will be here whenever we are in Athens.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We visited for the first time as a couple, for dinner.
Nice interior design, nice lighting.
The sticky pork is not crispy at all and leaves a taste of shrimp not pork at the end. We did not like it as the pork portion is smaller than the apple cube and it's served on top of a salty muffin.
The Beef Short Rib Plate the 3rd on the menu was okay.
Generally the portions are small, especially the fried potatoes.
The menu is different, it is generally described by great ideas and we can definitely see the vision behind the menu, however we did not like the execution.
It's our second time in such a Smokehouse and maybe this is not for us, our tastes and food culture may be different and may not be compatible.
Not everyone shares our perspective and it's okay.
We will not trash the place but definitely we have seen, tasted, been served better and at a lower cost.
In terms of taste the main meat menu has a lot to offer but the apettizers we ordered left a lot to be desired and need to be improved in terms of portions, taste, lead time for table service.
The place has exceptional service in terms of behavior and manners however the waitress did forget about us and we had to waive multiple times to seek their attention in order to place our order and the place was definitely not full as it had only 3 tables inside full.
In terms of cost, and value for money what we ordered was enough to make us feel more than full.
The total cost which is below the psychological limit of 100€ (50 EUR/person) is okay but it could be lower by 6-10 EUR for the offering and the overall food quality which was really good but not superior.
We will visit again after 6 months to order the other dishes and form a more well rounded opinion and we will update this review.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Don’t know where to start from, service was amazing — Ioanna (the waitress) gave us the best recommendations as to what the best sellers/dishes are. Although we were originally going there for the brisket which was out of this world, we also got tempted to a great selection of starters. Each packed a powerful punch of flavour, couldn’t believe how tasty everything was. Definitely recommend this place if you’re a meat lover. Very close to what you’d get if you were in Austin, TX.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We are from Alabama and have appreciation for fine smoked foods. The spare ribs were falling off the bone and the brisket was flavorful. The tropical slaw wasn’t overly sweet and the gentleman’s Mac (which is really Ditalini pasta with cheese and brisket) was smooth and flavorful. We enjoyed the meal immensely!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A delicious smokehouse that tastes like home. If you are a fan brisket, grilled meat, and slighted charred veggies, this is the place to go. Relatively affordable and a 15 min or less walk from Syntagma square. We had an appetizer and main entree and nearly had to be rolled out the door, we were so full and satisfied. Small note, but I do not think this is a place to bring small children or big families.
My recommendation:
1. Skip the appetizer (they were good, but I’d advise saving room for the entree and dessert)
2. Do not skip on that Mac and Cheese. Ask for a portion to share.
3. Get a cocktail, the bartenders know their business.
4. Make a reservation as the house was full and they barely squeezed us in at the bar.
5. If it’s nice weather, you can sit outside.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a gem in the center of Athens. A great interior atmosphere, very professional and friendly staff. The food was excellent. I would recommend the smoked brisket (as seen on the picture). The place also offers a wide variety of Old fashioned cocktails with really good whiskey as a base.
Would recommend 100%
