Interesting place, basically you can go there to see the guards as they make they make their performance. And also you can take a photo of them. At the two end of the square have a nice little park with Clementine trees. As far I know the parliament itself is not open for the public. To be honest I feel sorry for these guards because they have to stay there for hours and hours.

The Greek Parliament was built in 1843 and this historical building was meant originally to become the Palace of the Greek royal family. The building underwent different renovations and is surely worth a visit. Every hour there is a spectacular show of the Change of the Guards. Big crowds gather each time to watch this event since it represents a nice old tradition. While you are there, watch also the monument of the Unknown Soldier in the front.

Tomb of the unknown soldier in front. Watch the crossing of the guard. You can also feed the pigeons. There are usually street vendors selling food for €1. Pigeons usually will land on your arms if you hold the food in your hands and out your arms out parallel to the ground. Watch for those claws though as they will scratch you.

The parliament building itself does not offer too much, quite frankly, it is an ordinary governmental building. However, just in front of it, you could witness the change of guards.

This is a landmark building in Syntagma square in the centre of Athens. To get the most out of your visit, check schedule to watch the changing of the Greek guards also known as the presidential guards; It is a unique sight and one Sunday morning we watched the longer ceremony.

While walking to catch our tour bus in Central Athens, we just happened to witness the changing of the national guards. You can catch this every Sunday. In the photos, you'll see the back gates of the parliament where the parade starts. We accompanied the band and soldiers down the main street as they turned into the front entrance of the parliament. Beautiful traditional costumes. It was fun to watch them march. Didn't cost a cent!!
