Along with the nearby Botanical Garden, this place is a must visit. Beautifully restored so far, as restoration is still in progress, it offers a glimpse into the Byzantine years (11 century A.D). Along with the Monastery of Oshios Loukas in Beotia and Nea Moni in Chios, this is a Unesco World Heritage monument.

Wonderful place, a must see if you are interested in byzantine art/architecture. You can get there by bus from Athens (about 30 minutes, normal ticket costs 1.40 €), google has the bus connections. For example from Omonia square. Get off at the stop “Psychiatreio“. From there it's a two minute walk (along the highway in the direction of the bus, but on the other side of the street). The place is a little hidden but very close to the highway. Mind that the opening hours are tuesday and friday only, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to enter the site you have to ring the door bell.

One the oldest monasteries close to Athens, 11th century, but some elements are as old as 5-6th century. The Byzantine paintings inside are some of the finest someone could see.

Beautiful place for a Sunday walk. A small river and the forest is perfect.

Nice place to visit, located exactly next to botanical garden of Chaidari. Not a big place but the entrance is free and you see a well kept church of a Byzantine monastery and its well preserved murals.

Nice monastery, the mosaics are beautiful and the entry is free. Dress code isn’t needed (there are no monks currently living there)
