★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I spent a couple of nights in August and it was a relaxing and comfortable stay. Anogia is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Nida plateau and Mount Ida (Mt. Psiloritis) where the Idean cave is found.
The village itself is a pleasant place. It was quiet, yet lively at night with local cafes and bars and live music in the city square. Local cheese and vegetables are available in the shops along the main street. The cool and clean air has the refreshing charm of a mountain resort, which makes Anogia a welcome stop away from the summer heat of the coast.
My room was simple but clean and comfortable with nice views over the countryside and it was a pleasure to be awaken by the gentle growling of piglets and the chirping of birds. Often in the morning I could see several birds of prey gliding in the sky in large circles above the hotel.
The lady who runs the place was very welcoming and communicative. Just a few Greek words can take you a long way!
Breakfast is optional at 6€, which is a bit expensive. It could be improved by serving fresh jam, butter and honey (anything from local producers?) rather than the cheap hotel variety that comes in depressing prepacked single portions. On the other hand, the Greek coffee she made was excellent (I prefer Greek coffee and asked for that) and the hard boiled egg was simple but boiled to perfection! She also offered me fresh fruit from her kitchen garden.
Good value for money.
